On a gabled roof line, just checking that the spot of exist is the 12 inches, but also a 12″ ruler would not also hit the gable roof above, correct?

On the 10 foot from any opening or window, is this horizontal/vertical or a point in space 10 foot measurement? An exterior wall I’m thinking of placing has a window on an adjacent wall, so I’m trying to determine how to measure that 10 feet.
