Rainscreen for NuCedar Shingle Siding

talusscree | Posted in GBA Pro Help on

We are getting ready to re-side a house and are in the process of removing a failing EIFS system to make repairs and get ready for the new siding. We are covering the existing mixture of board sheathing and plywood sheathing with Vycor ENVS for air control and WRB. We plan to use Nucedar shake shingle siding which is individual shingles made out of pvc. Since the siding is impervious to water, would there be any advantage to having a rainscreen or drainage matrix(like cedar breather) behind this or is it a waste of money?

Thanks,
Mike Labesky

A rainscreen does more than just protect siding. On the other hand, your siding sounds similar to typical vinyl siding, which is considered a rainscreen.

There might be a small advantage (and some disadvantage) to DrainWrap.

A rain screen makes for a higher performing wall. The cost/benefit analysis depends on many things such as local climate, wall construction, roof overhangs etc.

    Mike,

Unfortunately you can not use a mesh product behind NuCedar Shingles. I'm not sure they allow them to be installed on strapping either.

    Mike,

Thanks for the replies. It sounds like I may want to contact Nucedar about this. Perhaps a product like Gravity Cavity or Sure Cavity from MTI may be acceptable because it covers the whole wall and much more solid than Cedarbreather.

      Mike,

That's probably your best bet. Their written installation instructions say not to install over furring, their installation video says no mesh. I wish companies would provide one place where all their requirements were spelled out, rather than having to wander though differing formats with differing results.
