Rain screen furring strip placement around windows

Cottagebuilder | Posted in General Questions on

Hey all. We’re trying to figure out where to place the furring strips around the windows for our rain screen. The windows are bucked out 3in to match the exterior foam thickness. We are installing 1×4 strapping for our rain screen. I can’t seem to find a good answer or picture of how the furring strips should be installed on the vertical sides of the windows. Should the furring strips be right against the window or should they be offset from the edges? We plan to use 1×4 trim. These windows also have nailing flanges if that makes a difference.

1x4 strapping, coupled with 1x4 trim, leaves little margin for siding. Horizontal or vertical siding?

Is the foam acting as your WRB?

It’s going to be horizontal clapboard siding. The foam is not the WRB.

    Cottagebuilder,

It doesn't matter much, but I like to keep the strips back from the jambs to allow some airflow around the window.

As climbing Carpenter said, if the siding butts up to the trim it's important the furring straddles the intersection of the two.
