EPDM Gaskets for Sill-Sealing Prefab Panels

andyfrog | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

Out of curiosity I investigated some prefab panel details and it seems like at corners one popular approach is to use an EPDM gasket to make the the air control layer continuous.

I’ve seen EPDM gaskets recommended for sill sealing, but this is the first I’ve seen of them used in a vertical application.

Would this be reliable? Then again, I don’t really see how you could do it otherwise if the sheathing layer in the diagram is going to be your air barrier.

In this application, the EPDM is protected from the weather, and realistically from most air exposure. The things that break down EPDM are UV light and ozone, and these gaskets will little exposure to either one. They should last forever.
