repair over-foamed window

sribe | Posted in General Questions on

Sloppy window installer over-foamed all windows. Some frames bowed enough that glass is bulging. Am I right that they have to be removed and reinstalled, or is there a simpler repair? And that the worst few might be permanently damaged and require replacement?

Everyone who installs windows deals with this at least once or twice. The only solution I know of is to dig out the foam, screw the jambs into position and redo the insulation. I've found a keyhole saw to be the tool for the job. If you don't have flanges you can use a reciprocating saw.

For what it's worth, filling the gap entirely with foam has a negligible benefit over using just enough foam to air-seal the interior.

I should have mentioned that we do have nail fins...
