Retrofitting a raised patterned brick wall with insulated rainscreen.

lblau_2021 | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

We are attempting to air-seal and insulate this modest brick and siding home with an insulated rainscreen and a new ventless roof assembly. The roof will receive 6-7″ of rigid and new covered and shingles, removing and reinstalling the Solar PV. Soffit panels will be removed to seal the joist pockets, allowing the wall insulation to extend to the underside of the eave.
The real issue is that the brick pattern has dimensional bumpouts. The question is how to navigate around the brick bumpouts, or is it more feasible to remove them? How to Attach the Rainscreen and Insulation (Considering Hempboard). Fasten to wood firring? Plywood between the bumpouts? Long grip screws directly into the brick? We plan to seal with a liquid AB, like Viscone or Prosoco MVP. We are extending spigots, lights, and vents; an insulated box will enclose the meters in the rear.
We are not replacing windows! We plan to trim the brick opening with a 1″ rigid and a Boral or other low-maintenance trim that can be removed at some future date when the window’s end of life arrives for replacement. Cost-effectiveness is a priority; the owner is not Elon Musk!
