Revisiting vinyl siding over furring strips

RICHARD EVANS | Posted in General Questions on

Dear GBA,

I’ve read the GBA spotlight article regarding vinyl siding over furring strips.  I wanted to check in to see if there are any updates from those that have done this. Since the article was written, Certainteed has added specific language stating that you cannot add vinyl directly over furring strips.

I have furring strips on my house (1x3s) as I was planning for LP smart side.  I’ve since decided to go with vinyl however due to cost restrictions and lead time to get pre-stained LP (4-6 weeks).

Will the vinyl siding become wavy? Droopy?  Weakened?

Thank you,

Rick

I think that is their concern. At the very least, it would void your warranty.
