Rockwool R15 vs Safe & Sound Interior Wall

pico_project | Posted in General Questions on

We have two interior walls open as part of our remodel. I want to ad some soundproofing to these walls for bathroom privacy and its a good buffer from the garage, mudroom noise from the rest of the house.

We have enough ‘exterior’ Rockwool R15 leftover to put into these walls. Any reason not to use it and go buy a few bags of Safe & Sound instead?

There's really no reason not to. I'd do it if it were me, and already had it on hand.

It will work fine, but don't expect massive levels of sound blocking performance. If you have the physical space, a second layer of drywall, ideally 5/8" type X, in additional to the mineral wool between studs will help with sound blocking.

BTW, when installing mineral wool in stud bays for sound attenuation, you want it pressed against the drywall on ONE side of the wall only, with an air gap on the other side. I try to press the mineral wool against whichever side has the thinnest/weakest drywall, since that's the side that will have more resonance issues with sound, so putting the mineral wool against that side maximizes the sound attenuating performance of the assembly.
