Silverboard Evaluation or Opinions?

rockies63 | Posted in Green Products and Materials on

I was watching the new Canadian show “Sarah Off the Grid” in which designer Sarah Richardson was building a new home in Creemore Ontario.. They were using an exterior insulation product called “Silverboard”.

I was wondering how this product with the added “reflective lamination” may perform or compare to other rigid exterior insulations? Do you think it may trap moisture between the board and the sheathing?

SilvRboard is foil-faced EPS (expanded polystyrene). It's not particularly unusual; it's not a miracle product.

Other types of rigid foam, notably polyisocyanurate, are also available in foil-faced versions.

If the foil facing of any insulation is facing an air space, then the adjacent air space plus the shiny surface have an R-value of about R-2, or in some cases a little more than R-2. The additional R-value comes from the air space.

If the foil facing is enclosed by other materials (like sheathing or siding), the foil facing provides no thermal benefit.
