Website repairs and the “Access Denied” glitch

Martin Holladay | Posted in General Questions on

Taunton’s tech team has been working to address GBA’s bedeviling glitches, including its defective spam filter and the dreaded “Access denied” glitch.

We are hoping that the maintenance work performed this week will reduce or (dare we hope?) eliminate the “Access denied” glitch. GBA readers who experience the “Access denied” problem are urged to report it. Your reports will help us improve this site.

Feel free to contact Taunton customer service:
[email protected]
or me:
martin [at] greenbuildingadvisor [dot] com
if you are improperly directed to the “Access denied” page.

Thanks.

I got access denied failures on the homepage featured articles until I logged in.

    Matthew,
    Thanks. We appreciate the information.

I agree with your conclusion that "access denied" problems are more likely for GBA readers who are not signed in than for GBA readers who are signed in. It's a clue.

I atest to that ..if i get accidentally signed out on one of my access, the problem is more frequent.
But at home i used to have difficulty even signing in .. so everything was out of bound.

I've gotten the Access Denied message quite a few times in the last months, both while signed in and not. My experience supports Martin's statement that it is more likely when I am not (yet) signed in. Sometimes, as Jin mentioned, the site won't let me sign in.

I haven't seen the problem so far today. For what it's worth, I have had the problem on both Firefox and Safari, under Mac OS 10.6.8, 10.9.2, and 10.9.3. I've also had the problem frequently using Safari on my 4th generation iPad, IOS 7.x. I think the proportion of problems is higher on the iPad than on the Mac, but it's hard to be sure.

Thanks for all your efforts to solve this problem. GBA is one of the most important websites in my learning.

    John,
Thanks for the feedback. After a few hiccups yesterday and early this morning, the new website appears to be stabilizing. I'm beginning to be hopeful that the worst of our spam and "access denied" problems are behind us.

Not only that -- but the "From Our Blogs" block has finally been restored to our home page.

    Jin,
I'm glad that the site is working for you. I agree that GBA is functioning more smoothly. The new fixes seem to have solved the spam problem.

    Excellent
Now that you are on a roll.....
How about getting rid of the not-so-useful "Helpful" box?
