Why is my roof decking not matching up on the corners of the hip ridge?

Deckpro | Posted in General Questions on

I have built a 16’x20′ deck with a hip roof and a cupola, on one side my roof decking matches up perfect and on the other side on both ends the plywood runs out and doesn’t match the adjacent side. It is the same on both ends on one side 4″ long one the 20′ side, I started the layout of the decking the same on both sides and one side is good and the opposite side is not. I don’t understand this all four ridge boards are the same length and all cut on the same rake.

    Chance,
I don't know what method you used to frame your hip roof or what method you used to measure and cut your sheathing. But it isn't that unusual for there to be slight differences in size or shape between different sides of a hip roof, even if the framers and sheathing crew are trying to make everything symmetrical.

If you are installing sheathing on a hip roof, the only way to make sure that the sheathing lines up perfectly with the framing is to cut each piece of sheathing to fit the place where it will be installed -- a custom cut.

Most sheathing crews let the roof sheathing run wild at rakes or hips, and then snap a line after the sheathing has been tacked up and cut the sheathing in place at the rake or hip.
