Wood siding splash back solution

Hey All,
One more wood siding question for the group. I know that many recommend against a stone veneer with wood sheathing and framing (even when done right with multiple drainage layers, which we would do). I also know that lots of people do add a stone veneer skirt on the homes.
We’ve debated having a stone veneer skirt wrap around the home 15-24″ high (TBC). The main reason would be to give some buffer from the stained cedar siding to increase longevity and reduce staining and discoloration from splashback and snow drifts (CZ6). I think the stone veneer checks that box.
If we don’t go stone veneer, we would run the cedar down to and slightly over the sill plate. What’s another way to help protect the wood siding? Would leaving 12″ of exposed foundation and adding lots of drain rock around the perimeter be sufficient? Just trying to think this all the way through.
Thanks,
