Zip sheathing + roofing felt

Roger_S39 | Posted in General Questions on

Hi all,

If zip sheathing was used for the roof sheathing without taping the seams and 30 lb. felt was placed over the top of it before the asphalt shingles were installed, would this be ok?

It would probably would be cheaper, and more straight forward, to add the felt than to leave it out and tape the seams; hence, why the question is being asked as is

Therefore going with this in mind:

1). would there be any concerns that water could get trapped between the shingles/felt and the top of the zip and cause problems etc.

2). Is installing felt etc. over zip done the same as it would be with regular OSB?

3). Any other thoughts/suggestions would be welcomed.

Thank you.

    Hi Roger.

You're plan wouldn't cause any problems that I can think of other than Huber would not honor the warranty on the ZIP System sheathing without the seams being properly taped with their tape, I don't believe. And you'd be paying a lot for the ZIP when many perfectly fine roofs have only regular OSB or plywood sheathing and felt underlayment.
