The BS* + Beer Show: Fine Homebuilding Magazine’s 40th Anniversary Celebration

A look back at one of the residential building industry's most valuable resources

Graphic by Travis Brungardt

This is a special episode of the BS* + Beer show in celebration of Fine Homebuilding magazine’s 40th Anniversary. If you have a fondness for the magazine, you will appreciate this tribute. The screen is full of seasoned builders and editors sharing their experiences and memories of the long-beloved publication. The people and their sentiments are authentic and touching. Co-host Mike Maines captures the spirit of the party poignantly:

“For me, the magazine has always represented people dedicated to excellence in their craft, who are communicating what they have learned so that others can benefit. Having written for FHB for over 15 years, I fully appreciate each of your roles in making it happen. I am honored to have talked with all of you, and to have worked closely with many of you. That spirit of striving for excellence and freely sharing so others can also excel is probably my biggest motivation today, and a big part of why we started BS + Beer.”

Enjoy the show!

Join us on Thursday, February 25, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EST when we will host Jesper Kruse and Anna Heath of Maine Passive House. They will discuss the topic of deep-energy retrofits by way of two case studies. One is Jesper’s own house, which he built about 20 years ago, and recently renovated to bring it up to Passive House Enerphit standards. He worked mostly from the exterior and kept a close eye on the budget. He and Anna will also share their approach to the renovations made to Oxbow Brewing’s Beer Garden, a 200-year-old barn that they turned into a high-performance structure while preserving antique details.

Guest bios

Jesper Kruse is the owner of Maine Passive House and a founding member of PassivhausMAINE. He is a Certified Passive House Consultant and builds and designs Passive Houses and other high-performance buildings in the mountains of Western Maine.

Anna Heath is a lead carpenter and project manager at Maine Passive House. She has been working with the company for three years and recently piloted a workshop series to teach carpentry to the community at Maine Passive House’s newly renovated shop space in Bryant Pond.
