This episode of the BS* + Beer show features a few of the industry’s top dogs (and amateur comedians): Steve Baczek, Peter Yost, and Jake Bruton. The hosts of the Unbuild It podcast stage a takeover of our regularly scheduled program to shake things up a bit, and offer innovative suggestions for how those in the residential building sector might move the needle in the right direction when it comes to carbon drawdown and greening the real estate market—among other issues.
Enjoy the show!
Join us on Thursday, April 15, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. EST when builder Andy Engel, architect Alexandra Baczek, and Tstud representative Mark Willie will discuss “Advancements in Framing.” We will look at the industry’s progression from timber framing to balloon framing to platform framing to advanced framing—including related materials. We hope to cover topics such as panel vs. board sheathing, engineered products like LVLs and cross-laminated timber, and working with Larsen trusses, Tstuds, and SIPs. With a builder, designer, and product advisor on hand, we are sure to hear distinct professional perspectives.
Andy Engel has been in the trades since September, 1979, when he gravely disappointed his mother and didn’t attend Drew University. Those years include stints as a trim carpenter, a stairbuilder, a spec builder, an editor at Fine Homebuilding and Professional Deck Builder magazines, and as a manager with JLC Live and The Remodeling Show. Currently, he works as a remodeling carpenter in Roxbury, Connecticut, and as a freelance writer, editor, and blogger for Fine Homebuilding and Green Building Advisor.
Alexandra Baczek is an associate at Steven Baczek Architect in New England. She is a graduate with a Master of Architecture, from Roger Williams University in Rhode Island. Currently she works on custom residential projects that exhibit high levels of energy efficiency, durability, health, comfort, and environmental responsibility. She has recently started contributing to Green Building Advisor’s Energy-Smart Details blog.
Mark Wille is the director of building experiences for US Engineered Wood Tstud. He is the remaining founder of BuildSmartChicago, which has evolved into an offsite ministry of education focused on Passive House and building science consulting teams. Mark serves on a number of boards including Carbon Free 2050, Passive House Alliance, Illinois Green Alliance, Tiny House Alliance USA, Habitat for Humanity Construction Committee, I.G.A. GreenBuilt Home Tour, Legacy Committee of GreenBuild 2018, and Rebuilding Exchange. He is active in the building science community and has retrofitted several residences of varying certifications. His free time is shared withPassive House Accelerator, Building Science #BS Friday Live, and Tstud™ Radio.
BS* + Beer Book Club
Because the hosts of the BS* + Beer Show all love to read, we thought we would celebrate the authors in our industry by adding a book club to the show every few months. We’ll announce the book, give you a few months to get it and read it, and conclude with a BS* + Beer Show episode where we will invite the author to join us, present, and take questions.
We have selected our fourth book: Musings of an Energy Nerd: Toward an Energy-Efficient Home by Martin Holladay, which can be purchased at the Taunton Store.
We hope you will pick up a copy and join the discussion on July 8, 2021.
