Are You an HVAC Designer or Installer That Actually Does the Calculations? Corbett Lunsford Wants to Know.

rockies63 | Posted in General Questions on

Corbett Lunsford just announced that he is compiling a list of HVAC contractors around the country that actually do the calculations needed to properly  size your HVAC system – rather than just relying on “rules of thumb”.

Joining the list is your choice, as his video explains.

I am 98.734% certain that rockies63 *is* Corbett Lunsford... a person who's made lots of helpful videos and seems genuinely interested in building science... it's just that it seems out of sync with the feel of GBA to make this sort of post. Why not just write: "Hi guys, Corbett here! I'm compiling a list..." You'll get more/better reactions.

Rockies has been sharing videos from many different people here for a long time now. I once reacted poorly to one of their posts when I thought it was spam, but they consistently provide good information. (Though I'm not a fan of videos so I rarely watch them, I often know the subject or presenter well enough to know it's quality content.)

If Rockies *is* Corbett, he may have reasons for keeping a low profile. I know that I enjoy helping people here when I should be working on a paying project, and I have considered going anonymous to make it easier to do so.

Sadly locally I was told they did manual Js when getting quotes, but not a single one produced forms when asked and some failed basic questions about the house's insulation/etc. so I am pretty sure they were not being honest. I ended up hiring a third party online (energy vanguard) to do the calcs. They all seemed to follow the rough rule of thumb of ton/sqft despite my house having far higher air tightness/insulation than typical here. The engineered manualJ came in at roughly half of what they claimed.
