Can I paint interior ceilings formed of roof decking ?

millscent | Posted in Interior Design on

I posted this question over in the general Q & A section but got no replies – possibly I am a bit impatient, or maybe this is more of an interior design issue?  But basically I am wondering how best to renew an old, stained ceiling formed from roof decking material. The ceiling is vaulted “cathedral” style with exposed beams and the raw (unpainted) decking surface forming the ceiling itself.

I was reluctant to paint, not wanting do delaminate or saturate the decking material, but not sure of other solutions workability.

I considered peel and stick paintable wallpaper, but the paper itself is vinyl (not breathable) or enclosing the ceiling but I have concerns for the added weight, sagging, of plywood/drywall.
