Conditioned Ceiling Cavity as Return Air Plenum

sommerbros | Posted in General Questions on

I have a project coming up with concealed ducted heat pump (Mitsubishi PEAD-A12AA7) located in a completely conditioned service cavity above the second floor ceiling and serving three bedrooms and one bath.
Since the HP and ductwork will be within the conditioned enclosure, is it feasible to utilize the service cavity as a return plenum with open stud cavities connected to return grills in the bedroom walls?

Project Details

Southwestern Ontario CZ5
1800sq’ (approx 850 being served by the HP)
High performance enclosure
R30 below slab
R45 wall
R80 ceiling
Airtightness target 0.60 ACH@50

Service cavity volume 750ft/3
