Ductwork Condensation Potential in Conditioned Attic

grant_v | Posted in General Questions on

Hello,

I’m in climate zone 4A.  Does ductwork need to be insulated to prevent condensation in a conditioned attic when 50 CFM per 1000 sq/ft of attic floor area is being delivered to the space (per code).

Thank you,
-Grant

Depends on the dewpoint of the air in the conditioned attic. If you have uncontrolled humidity in that space your dew point could be high enough that it condenses on the surface of the metal ducts. Do you plan on heating and cooling during all seasons? Is the AC unit sized to handle the latent load of the conditioned attic space? To be safe you could just throw a plug-in dehumidifier up there.
