Proper Ventilation When ERV Isn’t Working

GregH_207 | Posted in Mechanicals on

ERV hasn’t been working for 5 months because replacement fans were unavailable. One is supposed to be on its way, but now it’s heating season up here in climate zone 7 so minimizing heat loss is a concern. How much to we need to have windows open to avoid CO2 buildup?
Data:
2 residents
all electric house (no gas or oil appliances, no fireplace, etc)
ACH 0.58
measured volume 14787.5 cu ft
leakage at -50 pascals was 144 cfm
windows are tilt & turn – most are 3’x4.5′, 2 are 2’x3′

If you're not measuring you're guessing. Get an IAQ meter and measure.

To DC’s recommendation, I’ll add a plug for Allison Bailes’s article, What a Carbon Dioxide Monitor Tells You. He provides some product recommendations too.
