Is it better to use a range hood with the fan mounted in the hood or with the fan mounted in an exterior wall?

I usually mount my hood fan motors on the roof or exterior wall, simply because of noise. With the professional gas high BTU ranges people are wanting, we have to use fairly large motors. I am considering in-line motors in order to avoid having equipment mounted on the roof. Also, with new codes coming I hear we will need to provide make up air for larger fans.
