Is this asbestos?

betinadt | Posted in General Questions on

Hi All 🙂

We will be replacing this old glass roof, but are waiting until installation for three months.

The builders took out a ceiling that was below the glass roof. We now have a little piece looking like this.. probably from the insullation that was inside the ceiling before..

Do you think this look like a form of asbestos..? Just a bit worried since I am pregnant and have to live underneath it for 3 months until the roof is being replaced. It’s a piece of 1m x about 100cm.. ? The building was constructed around 1915, but not sure when the ceiling was put in.

Any advice or insight greatly appreciated..

Betina.

Doesn't look like asbestos. It's probably fiberglass, might be rock wool. The insulation was clearly installed after 1915.

Take a sample outside and put a propane or mapp gas torch to it- if it's fiberglass you'll be able to melt the fibers with the bright blue cone part of the flame.

I agree with Dana. Asbestos usually has shorter fibers. Hard to describe exactly, but what you have does look more like fiberglass. The “burn it in fire” test will help you be sure — asbestos will NOT burn, not even a little bit.
