Mini split maintenance/reliability?

jgold723 | Posted in General Questions on

We had two mini splits installed this spring. Two compressors with a single head each. The installer is recommending a 12 year maintenance plan (one cleaning every two years for six years). The maintenance plan would also extend the warranty for the 12-year period. They want a little over $2K.

I’m wondering how much maintenance these units need and how likely is it that we’d have a significant repair issue in the coming 12 years?

We've got two Fujitsu minisplits, eight years old. We have them cleaned every two years. There's a good amount of crud that accumulates. Other than that, zero maintenance or problems so far. $2 K for six cleanings for two units is OK, but only if you're very sure the installer will still be around.

Sounds like an unsecured interest free loan from you to the installer. No thanks.

I'd only consider it if the chance of the contractor disappearing was exceedingly low AND if it covered labor for replacing any failed parts during the time period.
