Nail base for vinyl shingles over foam board?

user-901114 | Posted in General Questions on

I need to lay vinyl shingles over foam board that will be held in place by 3-inch wide strapping 16 inches on center. But there isn’t going to be enough nail base because of need to stagger the joints. Suggestions?

    Stephen,
I'm not familiar with vinyl shingles, but it sounds like they need to be nailed more frequently than the 16-inch-on-center furring strips allow. You should contact the siding manufacturer to ask whether the product can be applied over furring strips, or whether the product must only be applied over a solid base like OSB or plywood.

If the manufacturer requires a solid base like OSB or plywood, that's what you need to install.
