Placing ERV in Conditioned vs Unconditioned space?

mikeysp | Posted in General Questions on

Zone 4a.

Is my reasoning sound?

As I was trying to finalize the location of my ERV and duct work in the conditioned envelope of my shop/house I thought why not place the system in the garage with only some fo the duct work entering the conditioned space.

I had not considered this because A/C duct in in unconditioned spaces is not best practice, but I cannot see any reason to apply this thinking to an ERV.

I would first check what the manufacturer says about it. Some motors and electronics don't handling freezing temps or high humidity well, both of which you might have in your unconditioned garage at different times.

Manufacturer has no problem with that. However, I just wanted to evaluate it from a building science perspective. Maybe I’m getting a little too much into analysis paralysis.
