Rain screen behind Hardie Shingle

spenceday | Posted in General Questions on

It is not clear to me if it is ok to install Hardie shingle panels on a rain screen or not. Any guidance?
I’ve read the Hardie spec as rainscreen ‘not required’.
CZ4 mixed Humid
I’m going to be siding an addition and need to cover around 900 sqft of wall. Sheathing is ZIP R6 on 2×6 16” oc walls. Most of the siding faces south or west  with a split between 12” overhangs and no overhangs.
Original plan was to match existing painted cedar sidewall shingles however the material pricing for that right now blows a too large hole in the budget.

    spenceday,

Yes it's pretty easy to install on strapping. I did the gables of this house with it on 2" plywood strips @ 16"oc.

Thank you. I figured it was ok over a rainscreen since Hardie at least doesn’t outright say ‘not recommended’.
