Story on who saves when switching to heat pump

1910duplex | Posted in Mechanicals on

tl:dr — switching from fuel oil or propane or electric heat most likely (unless you start spending a lot more on a/c than you did before)… natural gas, maybe not.

While the study does reference real and accurate numbers, I don't see why a "high efficiency cold climate" heat pump is $24000 installed on average. A nice 4 or 5 ton cold climate heat pump is maybe 6 or $7k for air handler and heat pump. So another $17k to install? It seems like a good contractor should be able to do that in about a day or two.

Materials costs are 1/3 of price for a vast swath of American businesses, let alone HVAC in particular. Have you compared the material costs of a burger vs what it costs at a fast food restaurant?

I just got an install quote for 3.5 ton heat pump for ~$18k. Auxillary heat adds $2.5k. There are rebates and incentives that lower the total cost from that quote.

we were 20k (canadian so like 27USD) for our cold weather really efficient hp installed with propane backup as well as all the ductwork in the house (new build). if those prices are us dollars and for retrofit with ducts in place that seems crazy. I did get a deal as i know the company that did it but for sure not more than 5k off.

Nrosdal, I'm not sure exactly what's going on in your post. But I think you did your math backwards.

      20k CAD = 14.7k USD

Our dollar is much more expensive than USD.

it was a joke that our dollar is worthless and 20k cad would equal $27.00 usd
