Description

Thermafiber, a subsidiary of Owens Corning, offers Sound Attenuation Fire Blankets and safing products that provide thermal insulation, flame resistance, and noise control. Used mainly in commercial wall systems but available for residential use as well, these blankets are made from 70% pre-consumer recycled iron-ore slag and basalt along with a phenolic resin binderGlue used in manufactured wood products, such as medium-density fiberboard (MDF), particleboard, and engineered lumber. Some binders are made with formaldehyde. See urea-formaldehyde binder and methyl diisocyanate (MDI) binder. , though a 90% recycled content product can also be specified. FormaldehydeChemical found in many building products; most binders used for manufactured wood products are formaldehyde compounds. Reclassified by the United Nations International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in 2004 as a “known human carcinogen." emissions are third-party tested at 0.012 parts per billion. Available in 2.5 and 4.0 pcf densities and 1" to 6" thicknesses, these 48"-long blankets come in 16”, 17”, 24", and 25” widths. The added inch width creates a tighter fit for improved sound protection. Sound absorption coefficient ranges from 0.95 for 2" blankets to 1.20 for 6" blankets; flame spread and smoke developed ratings are 0; and R-values are 3.7 and 4.2 per inch for the 2.5 and 4.0 pcf products, respectively.
