Airsealing between shared exterior walls?

alexdorf | Posted in Green Building Techniques on

In looking at a project that has three townhomes (light frame construction), which share an exterior wall, what are some best practices to air-seal between the units?

    Alex,

Is this a retrofit or new construction? and by light frame, do you mean cold formed steel or wood stud? (or block?) If you could describe the layers from each side that would help a lot. That wall already requires a fire rating, and has special requirements in the IRC. Air sealing is somewhat baked into that, but in general the wall has similar environmental conditions on each side, assuming they're both occupied and conditioned year round. There are notes in there about metal electrical boxes not aligning, which materials are allowed, and the cuts in the drywall, etc..

We can help with just a little more info.
