Anyone use Armaflex or similar to insulate ERV intake duct

jadziedzic | Posted in Energy Efficiency and Durability on

I’m looking at beefing up the insulation on my ERV intake duct to try to resolve condensation issues on the intake duct insulation that occur when the outside temperature drops below approximately 20 degrees F.  Dialing back the airflow to IRC levels (from ASHRAE levels) helped reduce – but not eliminate – condensation on the (foil) insulation exterior wrap.

I initially considered Zehnder’s ComfoPipe as a replacement for the metal duct, but that only carries an R2.3 rating.  (Zehner acknowledged ComfoPipe can have condensation with low outdoor temperatures without additional insulation.)  Plus there’s the issue of adapting the ComfoPipe ID (6.3″) to the standard 6″ collar on my Renewaire ERV.

Armaflex at 1″ gives me about R4 and adding an R8 fiberglass wrap gets me up to about R12.  From the videos on YouTube it looks fairly easy to work work, but was hoping for someone with personal experience with the product who might chime in.
