Attaching Gable Stud to Gable Rafters

slugboy6000 | Posted in General Questions on

When I built my cabin (home) about 10 years ago, I face nailed through the inside of the gable end rafters into the gable end studs which I didn’t notch (see images below).
With a bit more experience, I wonder if that was sufficient.
I was assuming the gable end walls weren’t load bearing but there are significant snow loads (60-70psf) on the 12:12 slate roof – it’s heavy.

Do you think it’s worth beefing this up a bit somehow?

While unconventional, I don't see a need to change anything. The studs will easily accommodate the additional load of slate.

    slugboy6000,

If it is going to worry you, throw another couple of nails into each one.

If it is bearing on your top plate then the load is the exact same as the rest of your rafters (though, maybe a touch more considering eave). I would be more concerned with your rafter ties and making sure they are appropriately fastened than with your gable rafter, though with a 12/12 there is not a ton of outward thrust. The way you framed it I would be more concerned with the shear of the structure, as the way it’s framed there is not edge nailing. This is very important with sheathing, I have not designed a structure with board sheathing so I dont know how important that is, but I imagine it would help.

Edit: also looking at it again since it is not balloon framed the edge nailing doesn’t matter as much
