Rain screen with vinyl siding

dennis_vab | Posted in General Questions on

My home is under construction right now, I am running the project and framing myself.

My wall assembly is a 2×6 wall with Huber zip 7/16” sheathing. I will be attaching 1-2” of exterior foam (still deciding how much foam to add). I know I can nail vinyl through 1” or even 2” of foam. I plan to do vertical vinyl which brings me to the question.

I’m worried about putting holes in my wrb (won’t be able to hit studs with vertical vinyl) especially when I plan to have fluffy insulation behind it. My concern is when the siding will be redone years down the road, how is someone supposed to seals all the nail holes under the foam.

The two options seem to be 1.) leave the nails from siding or 2.) put a diagonal furring strip up (I was thinking ripping down 7/16” zip for this).

What would you do?

    Dennis,

My non-expert opinion is that there's not much risk since the ZIP will largely seal around the nails.

Also... If you haven't already, be sure to read this article to confirm that you are using the minimum thickness of rigid foam for your climate: https://www.greenbuildingadvisor.com/article/calculating-the-minimum-thickness-of-rigid-foam-sheathing.
