Advanced framing techniques, siding, and trim

| Posted in General Questions on

I’m designing a home using the U.S. DOE’s advanced framing techniques and have a question about siding and trim.

Below is one of my windows. You’ll note that there is a single continuous stud on either side of the opening, and I’m using Thermal Buck.

On top of the framing will be zip sheathing, 1″ of exterior foam and 1×4 furring strips.

For siding, I was looking at fiber cement horizontal lap siding, as specced by the wife. However, it looks like the siding manufacturer wants all ends of the product to be nailed (screwed, I guess, in this case) to studs or furring strips.

It seems with typical window trim, where you’ve got at least a x4 piece of trim around the window, there won’t be a way to hit the furring strips or the studs for the ends of the siding. In the picture I’ve attached, I might be able to use a wider furring strip on the left to bridge the gap, thereby also closing off the route for ventilation, but that definitely doesn’t work on the right side….

What are y’all doing in this situation?
